Pothos does best with a diluted, balanced soluble fertilizer while it is actively growing. Stop feeding when growth stalls in dim winter light. If you see white crust on the soil or brown, crisp leaf tips, check for salt buildup before adding more fertilizer. An unhappy pothos rarely needs a stronger dose.

Is the Soil Dry All the Way Down or Only on Top?

Is the Soil Dry All the Way Down or Only on Top?, GS Plant Foods

When the heat comes on, check the mix below the surface before deciding to water or feed.

  1. Lift the pot to judge its weight. Dry mix feels noticeably lighter than mix that is still wet at the bottom.
  2. Push a finger into the mix, away from the stems. Check whether it is dry below the surface.
  3. Look at the edges of the pot. Mix that is dry against the wall but damp in the middle is drying unevenly.
  4. Write down when you last fed and flushed, and where any crust appears.

If the mix has dried through, water normally. If it is still wet below the surface, wait before adding more water. Neither condition, by itself, calls for fertilizer.

Why Does Salt Crust Up in a Heated Room?

Why Does Salt Crust Up in a Heated Room?, GS Plant Foods

Soluble fertilizer leaves salts behind as water evaporates. In dry, heated air, those salts can collect at the soil surface and along the pot edge. Roots near those deposits can become damaged.

Continuing a summer feeding schedule in a dim November room adds nutrients faster than a slow-growing plant can use them. White crust is a reason to flush the mix, not increase the feed.

Is It Salt Burn, Under-Feeding or Normal Shedding?

Yellow leaves alone do not prove a nutrient shortage. Check the soil and new growth before choosing a treatment.

What you see Likely cause What to do
An occasional yellow lower leaf, without crisp tips or crust Normal shedding of old leaves Remove the yellow leaf. Do not change feeding based on this alone.
Yellow leaves with brown, crisp tips and white crust Possible salt buildup Stop feeding and flush with plain water.
Brown, crisp tips near a heating vent Dry air or uneven watering Move the plant away from direct heat and check moisture below the surface.
Small, pale new leaves after a long dim stretch Growth slowed by low light Provide brighter indirect light rather than more fertilizer.
Wilting while the mix stays wet, especially with mushy stems Possible root rot Inspect the roots. Remove rotten roots and repot in fresh mix if needed.

Brown tips are not a feeding cue. Adding fertilizer to salt-stressed roots makes the problem worse, because stressed roots already take up less of what they are given.

Should You Feed a Pothos Through the Dim Months?

In most homes you should not feed through the dim months. Spring through early fall is the usual feeding season, but new growth matters more than the calendar. A pothos that has stopped producing leaves does not need fertilizer.

Look at the vine tips over several weeks. If they remain still, pause feeding. If your plant continues growing in a bright winter room, feed cautiously and less often than during summer.

How Weak Should a Winter Feed Be?

Half-strength fertilizer is a common growing-season starting point for indoor pothos, provided it follows the product’s houseplant directions. It is not a winter target. During slow winter growth, use a much weaker solution or skip feeding.

  1. Confirm that the plant is producing new growth and has no signs of salt stress.
  2. Check the label’s houseplant dilution instructions. Product concentrations differ, so there is no universal spoonful-per-gallon rate.
  3. Apply the diluted feed to moist mix, not dry roots.
  4. Wait several weeks and reassess growth before feeding again.

Our 20-20-20 All Purpose Fertilizer with Kelp is a balanced, water-soluble option with micronutrients for indoor houseplants. Start with its application directions, then reduce feeding as growth slows.

Can a Kelp Spray Fix Salt Stress in a Dry Room?

Foliar kelp will not remove salts from the potting mix or repair damaged roots. Leaves dry quickly in heated air, and keeping foliage wet in low light can encourage rot.

If you use Organic Liquid Kelp Seaweed, follow its directions and treat it as a supplement, not a rescue treatment. Flush accumulated salts and correct watering before adding another product to the root zone.

How Do You Flush Salt From a Pot or Hanging Basket?

Run plain water through the mix and let it drain away completely. The pot needs an open drainage hole; adding water to a sealed container traps both water and dissolved salts.

Flushing a Pot Without Moving It

If the pot must stay in place, arrange a way to collect and remove all runoff before starting.

  1. Water slowly across the soil surface until water runs freely from the drainage hole.
  2. Continue rinsing with plain water so dissolved salts can leave the mix.
  3. Let the pot drain completely.
  4. Empty the saucer so the pot does not sit in runoff.

Flushing a Hanging Basket

Lower the basket and take it to a sink or shower. Pour plain water slowly across the surface, allowing it to drain freely through the bottom. Let the basket finish draining before rehanging it.

When a Flush Is Not Enough

Heavy crust or continued decline after flushing calls for a root inspection. Black, mushy roots need attention, not fertilizer: remove damaged roots and repot in fresh mix. Wait for healthy new growth before resuming feeding.

Keeping Pothos and Fertilizer Away From Pets

Pothos is toxic to pets and people if chewed. Its insoluble calcium oxalate crystals irritate the mouth and can cause swelling. Keep the plant and fertilizer out of reach; a natural fertilizer does not make pothos safe to eat.

If a pet chews pothos, contact a veterinarian or animal poison service. For human exposure, contact Poison Control or a medical professional.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my pothos lower leaves yellow after the heat comes on?

An occasional yellow lower leaf can be normal shedding. If yellowing comes with crisp tips or white crust, check for salt buildup and uneven drying. Hold off on fertilizer while you check moisture below the surface.

Is rice water good for pothos?

Rice water is not a reliably balanced fertilizer. Adding it on top of regular watering can keep the mix too wet and encourage mold or root rot. Use plain water according to soil moisture, and a measured fertilizer only during active growth.

Can I use a general all-purpose plant food on pothos?

A balanced, soluble plant food suits actively growing pothos when diluted according to its houseplant directions. Our 20-20-20 All Purpose Fertilizer with Kelp is one option; check its directions before mixing, and pause feeding when growth stops.

How do I help a golden pothos thrive in a dim room?

Give it the brightest indirect light available. Golden pothos tolerates lower light, but tolerance does not mean strong growth: new leaves may stay small. More fertilizer cannot replace light, so stop feeding if the plant is not growing.

Is pothos safe around pets?

Pothos is not safe around pets. Chewing it can cause painful mouth irritation and swelling in pets. Keep vines beyond their reach, and contact a veterinarian or animal poison service if your pet chews the plant.
